Although it may seem you could buy any rod and have a successful outing, it is important to understand the differences and choose the right one for you.

Baitcasting Rods – It of this type are more advanced because of the type of reel that is used. The weight of the bait carries the line out through guides similar to those on it, but the line spool turns on its own, so the fisherman or woman must control it actively.

Fly Fishing Rods – Longer, usually flexible it are fitted with a special fly reel that simply stores the line instead of helps reel it in. They are meant to be very mobile and controllable.

Pole and Line Rods – At their most basic, it are really just a long pole or stick and a piece of string with a hook on the end. Although you may not find these in sporting goods stores, a pole and a line are all you really need to use for it.
