Before the turn of the 20th Century, a branch of the US law enforcement approached Spyderco about creating a knife for their undercover agents. This was because their agents found firearms were difficult to carry without being conspicuous, but a knife was never a problem. The design of the knife was successful enough that a civilian trainer version was made for the general public.
There are other versions of this particular knife, including the Spyderco Native 5, Spyderco Dragonfly 2 and the Spyderco Persistence Blue, some of which are covered in the Spyderco resilience review. However, in this Spyderco Civilian review, we will go over the specs for this particular knife and evaluate its effectiveness.

How to Carry
This particular knife is meant to be carried in small pockets and hidden away. It is not a general use knife, but more for emergency or quick-use situations. In fact, the knife itself is little different from the military version which is used in self defense.
Better Rating Spyderco Civilian Knife
In terms of blade testing, this curved knife can cut a remarkable variety of materials. However the shortness of the blade prevents certain forms of cutting from occurring. Still, as a weapon of self defense it is remarkable what this blade can do.
Normal sharpening tools can be used to create an even sharper blade, although it must be noted that it is quite thin and usually keeps its sharpness unless used on a very strong, dulling surface such as tool steel metals and the like. The handle and blade can be engraved for personalization as part of a special order.
There are certainly a number of distinguishing features that marks this particular knife. However, despite its versatility, it is not a general use knife.
- “S” Blade Shape
- Ergonomic Design
- Black G-10 Handle
- Two Position Clip
You can find the Spyderco Civilian for sale at a price range of roughly $280 – $300 depending on the retailer. Although this particular version has been on sale for the past few years, it has kept its value quite well.
Small, compact and versatile, the Spyderco Civilian g-10 knife is certainly a potent trainer knife for all types of cutting and carving. The blade size is just right for most types of quick cuts, but arguably too small for some applications.
In this Spyderco Civilian review, we have looked over the specs, design and features of this particular knife. It has certainly impressed those who have used it for self defense and other uses as well. For anyone looking for a compact blade to do a number of cutting jobs, this is certainly one of the best on the market.
